Every tonne of material we accept is processed and contributes to the creation of renewable energy-in our case we create electricity and provide it to the National Grid. The incoming materials are depackaged if required, and fed through our process which involves naturally-occuring micro-organisms breaking down the biodegradable content, in the absence of oxygen, and releasing methane as they do so. This methane and other gases are captured in sealed bags located on the top of the process tanks, and is then burned in our on-site engines to produce electricity and heat. The electricity is fed into the National Grid, and the heat is used to keep our process at the right operating temparature. We produce enough electricity each year to keep the lights on and kettles boiling in over 4000 homes.
